“I am who I am…….I can’t be anyone else. I wasn’t raised to be anyone else. You have to be who you are.”
Richard Sherman, corner- back for the Seattle Sea hawks.
I am truly blessed to have been watching CNN tonight and to have caught this piece on Richard Sherman.
A wonderful CNN journalist was interviewing him because #1 he is a key player for one of the teams in the upcoming Super Bowl 2014 and #2 The CNN Journalist wanted to have him tell his side of the story about the remarks he made at the end of the last game he played.
He spoke so eloquently in this interview with CNN. He has made some hard decisions in his life and he could have chosen to join a gang( he said that at times, there were temptations to do this). But he chose going to college at Stanford so he could make his money this way and be a role model for others who may also be tempted to join a gang.
He said he was surprised at how quickly the racial slurs were tweeted and spun on social media after his “rant” after the game. From deep awareness, he said that the way he has to be while playing football is different from the way he is in normal life. He spells it out so clearly. Football is a violent sport** and when someone sticks a microphone in front of a football player right after they have been on the field, things will not come out as eloquently as he would like.
He showed his true colors tonight from his true self. Though, I am not a football fan and never will be, I am blessed to know Richard Sherman. I am blessed to hear him say that he cannot be anyone else but himself.
I am sorry Richard for the violence you experienced from people who do not possess the higher consciousness that you do. No one could sling the violence on social media that was slung unless they are dealing with an inner violence that you have moved beyond. I thank your mother for raising you to be yourself. You are blessing the world Richard and you are doing it by being yourself.
I will look forward to watching you on Super bowl Sunday Richard. And of course, mainly, I will be watching to see the commercials ( as a non football fan) but I will say a little prayer of thanksgiving when I see you on the field.
** I recently wrote a blog that I did not post about the violence in football. I feel validated a bit by what you said about football. The title of my blog: FOOTBALL, YOU GOTTA HATE TO LOVE IT, does speak of the violence. I hope you do not get hurt.
